Surrounded by spectacular banks and ditches, the impressive ruins of Helmsley Castle stand beside the attractive market town of Helmsley. The fortress was probably begun after 1120 by Walter Espec - 'Walter the Woodpecker'. Renowned for piety as well as soldiering, this Norman baron of 'gigantic stature' is founded nearby Rievaulx Abbey. Rievaulx Abbey was founded by St Bernard of Clairvaux in 1132 and became one of England's wealthiest monasteries before its dissolution by King Henry VIII in 1538.
